FAQs (and some less common problems)

Q1I get an error message

Run-time error 339. Component "comdlg32.ocx" or one of its dependencies not correctly registered

or else

Run Time error 429. ACTIVEX component can't creat object

A You need to download and install evaluation.zip
(This installs some necesary system files that are required by the latest versions of scrutelle and CM)
But first make sure you keep a copy of your existing licence file C:\Program Files\scrutelle\scrutelle.ini

Left Mouse Click Here and select Save
Save the ZIP file to a temporary location (eg C:\install or C:\temp)

Then open that folder and click on evaluation.zip
Then click on Setup.exe in the WINZIP window
After the installation is complete, you will need re-install later versions of the programs (if you have them) and your scrutelle.ini file
The default location is C:\Program Files\scrutelle

Q2 An error message keeps coming up when I try to open Version 4.11
The message reads: Cannot find file scrutelle.ini

A The file scrutelle.ini contains your licence details, such as your registration name and the max no of competitors & judges etc

It needs to be in the same folder as scrutelle.exe
C:\Program Files\scrutelle is recommended for Windows XP
C:\scrutelle\program is recommedned for Vista

Version 4.11 now exits the program if the INI file is not found. Previously it was possible to continue even though this error meassage had appeared. This caused problems

Q3 What do you mean by scrutelle.exe?
In my folder it just says scrutelle

A The .exe is called the file extension and tells the computer what type of file it is
In order to make sure that scrutelle is installed correctly, you need to know too!

On Windows XP click on Tools/Folder Options/View
scroll down to Hide Extensions for known file types
and uncheck the box

For Vista Open a folder or open explorer
Click the Layout button (to the left of the Views button) Click Folder Options
Click the View tab
Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types
Click OK

Q4 I get an error message keeps when I try to open Competition Management
The message reads: Run Time error 53
File not found!

A The competiton management program is called scrutelle-cm.exe and it needs to be in the same folder as scrutelle.exe
C:\Program Files\scrutelle is recommended for Windows XP
C:\scrutelle\program is recommedned for Vista

Q5 I get an error message when I try generate data files in Competition Management
The message reads: Run-time error '76' - path not found

A The most likely reason is that you have a blank or non-alphanumeric character in the folder name for your data

Note you should NOTstore your data in C:\Program Files\scrutelle

It is best to keep your data for different competitions separate

C:\scrutelle\data\competition1
C:\scrutelle\data\competition2
etc is recommended

Q6 I've had no luck with this new scrutineering program, the database seems to be missing and all I get is a nice front page but I can't do anything with it (I downloaded the program from www.scrutelle.com). Hoping you can help

A The program does not have any database. You have to enter all the data yourself for a competition

Estelle says that when she demonstrates the program, she starts with a set of data already entered and runs a competition. Then she goes back to explain how to enter the data

You can download a zip file containing data for a recent competition by   CLICKING HERE

Extract the two files (Page.sct & Page.scx) to a suitable folder eg c:\scrutelle

Then run the program
Open the file Page.sct
Select an event

R Thanks for the informative email and I have been able to test the program , and I have even entered a small competition. My problem was I didn't have access to the help file to guide me on how operate the program but all is well now and I'll keep testing
