FREQUENLY ASKED QUESTIONS (and some less common problems)

Q1I get an error message

Run-time error 339. Component "comdlg32.ocx" or one of its dependencies not correctly registered

or else

Run Time error 429. ACTIVEX component can't creat object

A

This is because one or more of the .ocx or .dll files as described in TECHNICAL MATTERS are not installed on your computer (if you already have MSOffice then they probably will be and you will not get these messages)

Q2 An error message keeps coming up when I try to run scrutelle
The message reads: Cannot find file scrutelle.ini

A The file scrutelle.ini contains your licence details, such as your registration name and the max no of competitors & judges etc

It needs to be in the same folder as scrutelle.exe
See INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS

Q3 What do you mean by scrutelle.exe? - In my folder it just says scrutelle

A The .exe is called the file extension and tells the computer what type of file it is
In order to make sure that scrutelle is installed correctly, you need to know too!

On Windows XP click on Tools/Folder Options/View
scroll down to Hide Extensions for known file types
and uncheck the box

For Vista Open a folder or open explorer
Click the Layout button (to the left of the Views button) Click Folder Options
Click the View tab
Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types
Click OK

Q4 I get an error message keeps when I try to open Competition Management
The message reads: Run Time error 53 - File not found!

A The competition management program is called scrutelle-cm.exe and it needs to be in the same folder as scrutelle.exe
See INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS

Q5 I get an error message when I try generate data files in Competition Management
The message reads: Run-time error '76' - path not found

A The most likely reason is that you have a blank or non-alphanumeric character in the folder name for your data

It is best to keep your data for different competitions separate in C:\scrutelle\data

eg
C:\scrutelle\data\competition1
C:\scrutelle\data\competition2

Q6 I've had no luck with this new scrutineering program, the database seems to be missing and all I get is a nice front page but I can't do anything with it (I downloaded the program from www.scrutelle.info). Hoping you can help

A The program does not have any database. You have to enter all the data yourself for a competition

Estelle says that when she demonstrates the program, she starts with a set of data already entered and runs a competition. Then she goes back to explain how to enter the data

You will find sampl data in C:\scrutelle\data\samples

R Thanks for the informative email and I have been able to test the program , and I have even entered a small competition. My problem was I didn't have access to the help file to guide me on how operate the program but all is well now and I'll keep testing

Q7 I get an error message when I run Competition Management and/or the Results Module
The message reads: Run-time error '21474113(8000fff)':
Can not open a docfile

A This message is saying that scrutelle is unable to read or write to the Excel file

This error usually happens when you try and open an XLS file in CM which is already open in Excel. It is best to exit Excel before running CM, but if you want to refer to the XLS file in Excel while running CM, save a copy under a different name and keep that open in Excel

Alternatively, this error can happen if you store your data in a folder under My Documents. This is because the routines in scrutelle CM & RM that read and write XLS files fail if the folder or data file name contains blanks. The problem can be avoided by following the recommendations regarding data folders
See INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS

Q8 I get an error message when I run the Results Module
Error - Event 14 recall data is missing

A This message is saying that that there are more than 8 competitors in the final and that this is probably because the recalls data in the SCT file is missing

This can happen if you have used CM to generate your data but have entered the recall information directly into scrutelle. Then you have subsequently udated your data in CM after completing some events. The blank fields in the XLS file will then overwrite the recall data in the SCT file

To avoid this problem, put the recall data into the XLS file. If you are the using CM Update Data option you should NOT make any changes within scrutelle Setup

Q9 I get an error messages which I cannot understand

A If you can copy the error messages then paste them into an email to support@scrutelle.info

alternatively (and even better) email a screen dump. Often this gives more clues as to what you are doing.

To do this
(1) Press the Prt Sc key (usually near the top right of your keyboard
(2) Open a new email by clicking here support@scrutelle.info
(3) Put the mouse cursor into the message space
(4) Press Contol-V
(5) Send the email
